Causes and Signs of Gum Disease (Gingivitis & Periodontitis)

You might be thinking, I brush, use mouthwash, and sometimes floss, too. So there is no need to worry about gum disease, right? Not so fast. Millions of people suffer from gum disease, and just because you brush every day does not guarantee that you will not fall victim to this common disease.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Periodontal (or gum) disease is the result of bacteria building up in your mouth. The mouth is naturally full of bacteria, but there is a very particular balance it needs to maintain. Normally, brushing and flossing help keep the unwanted bacteria from attacking our teeth, but if hygiene is poor, plaque levels can quickly get out of control and become dangerous to our pearly whites. Plaque is a sticky and colourless film that adheres to the surface of our teeth, and where our teeth and gums meet. Plaque itself does not damage our teeth or gums, but when it hardens it develops into tartar. It is this tartar that aggravates the gums, as it allows more plaque to accumulate around it, and makes it easier for bacteria to increase in numbers. It really is a vicious cycle. Brushing alone cannot get rid of tartar. Once it forms, you need a dental professional to remove it. So where do these bacteria that cause plaque and tartar to develop come from? Here are a few things that can either cause or worsen existing gum disease:

  • Smoking
  • Hormonal changes
  • Diabetes
  • Illness
  • Certain medications
  • Genetics

How Do I Know if I Have Gum Disease?

Most people never realize they are developing gum disease until it has become advanced. Maybe you notice that your gums bleed a bit when brushing or that your gums look puffy and swollen in the mirror. It can be easy for people to ignore these subtle signs until they become more than a nuisance, or when their dentist notices the tell-tale signs of periodontal disease and warns them about its danger. Symptoms you should watch out for include:

  • Bad breath
  • A bad taste in the mouth
  • Red and swollen gums
  • Tenderness
  • Bleeding (even a little bit)
  • Loose teeth
  • Receding gums
  • Infections in the mouth

Dangers of Periodontal Disease

Ranging from a small amount of gum inflammation in an otherwise healthy mouth (called gingivitis), to full blown infections and abscesses in the gums around loose teeth (called periodontitis), periodontal disease can cause all sorts of problems. When left untreated, it can result in bone and tooth loss. Since bone loss can make reconstruction difficult, patients may find their options limited when it comes to restoring their smile. In addition to tooth abscesses, loose teeth, and even tooth loss, severe periodontal disease can weaken the immune system and cause infections in other parts of the body, including the heart. Some research even reports a higher incidence of premature births amongst mothers who suffer from periodontal disease. But there is hope. If caught and treated, gum disease can be managed, leaving you with the healthy smile that you want. As always, early detection and treatment will result in the best results.
